    Description

For your consideration, an interesting and rare example of British sterling silver holloware: a 1752 armorial coffee pot.
With baluster-form body on molded pedestal base, fitted with a nicely cast and decorated spout and handle mounts, the pot with a tall, domed, hinged cover and flame finial. Scrolled handle is of fruitwood, probably cherry. Body is engraved with an armorial depicting raised armored fist, surrounded by motto “ISTO VELOCIOR VITA”,

    here the faster life

    .
The Georgian pot is engraved with the Shuttleworth family crest (
A cubit arm in armour, grasping in the Gauntlet a weaver's shuttle, tipped and furnished with yarn threads pendent.*
). This coffee pot was probably made for
John Shuttleworth, born 23 December 1707 in Lincoln, Lincolnshire, England; died in 1783.
The hallmarks are for London, 1752 and the maker's mark, though rubbed, appears to be for the well-regarded London silversmith John Payne. In exceptional condition for 171-year-old sterling holloware, we have lightly cleaned but not heavily polished the piece to maintain the centuries old patina.
    Height: 9"
    Spout to handle: 7-1/4"
    Weight: 24 ounces / 680 grams
